Basella alba

Common names: Malabar Spinach, Ceylon Spinach, Indian Spinach, Vine Spinach, Basella

A vigorous tropical climbing leafy vegetable with thick, glossy green leaves and succulent stems. Basella alba grows rapidly in warm weather and is excellent for trellises, fences and containers. Its tender leaves can be cooked like spinach and are especially popular in Asian cuisine.

Seed germination tips:

  • 🌱 Scarify seeds: Lightly nick or sand the hard seed coat to encourage faster germination.
  • 💧 Soak: Soak seeds in water for 12–24 hours before sowing.
  • 🌡️ Temperature: Best around 20–30°C.
  • 🌱 Sowing depth: Sow about 1–1.5 cm deep.
  • 💦 Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Germination: Usually takes around 10–20 days.
