Botanical Name: Eucalyptus pellita

Common Names: Large-fruited Red Mahogany, Red Mahogany, Pellita Gum

Short Description

Eucalyptus pellita is a fast-growing evergreen tree native to northeastern Australia and parts of New Guinea. It is known for its reddish-brown, fibrous bark, broad green leaves, and clusters of white flowers. The tree produces woody seed capsules containing small seeds and is valued for its durable timber, attractive appearance, and use in forestry plantations.

This tropical and subtropical species grows well in warm climates with full sunlight and well-drained soil. It can reach 30–40 metres or more under favourable conditions and is suitable for forestry, reforestation, and large landscapes. Its vigorous growth and adaptability to humid tropical environments make it an important timber species.

5 Seed Germination Tips

  1. Prepare the medium: Use a fine, sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix.

  2. Sow seeds: Scatter seeds on the surface and cover them very lightly, as they need light for good germination.

  3. Maintain moisture: Mist gently to keep the growing medium consistently moist.

  4. Provide warmth: Maintain temperatures around 22–28°C.

  5. Ensure light: Place the seed tray in a bright location with indirect sunlight. Germination commonly occurs within 1–3 weeks under suitable conditions.

Growing note: Avoid burying the tiny seeds deeply or allowing the soil to dry out during germination. Transplant seedlings once they are strong enough to handle.
