Citrus grandis

Common names: Pomelo, Pummelo, Shaddock, Chinese Grapefruit, Jabong, Chakotra, Batabi Lemon, Bali Lemon, Lusho Fruit, and Great Citron.

Short description:
Citrus grandis is the largest citrus fruit species, producing large round to pear-shaped fruits with a thick rind and sweet to mildly tangy flesh. Native to Southeast Asia, this evergreen tree typically grows 5–15 meters tall and is widely cultivated for its nutritious fruits, which are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Pomelo is also one of the ancestral species from which modern grapefruit was developed.

Germination tips:

  • Use fresh seeds for the highest germination rate.
  • Clean off all fruit pulp and soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours.
  • Sow 1–2 cm deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix.
  • Maintain a temperature of 22–30°C.
  • Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Germination usually occurs within 2–6 weeks.
  • Provide bright light or full sun after germination and protect young seedlings from frost.
