Juniperus procera
Common names: African Juniper, East African Juniper, Ethiopian Juniper, African Pencil Cedar, East African Cedar, Pencil Cedar, Juniper Cedar.
Description:
Juniperus procera is a large evergreen conifer native to the highlands of eastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It can grow into a tall, impressive tree with a straight trunk, dense foliage and aromatic, scale-like leaves. The blue-green to dark-green foliage and reddish-brown bark give it an attractive appearance. It is an important highland tree and is also cultivated as an ornamental and timber species.
Germination tips:
Seeds have deep dormancy and can be difficult to germinate. Clean the seeds and soak them in water for 24 hours, then provide cold stratification for several weeks to a few months. Sow about 0.5–1 cm deep in a well-draining sandy mix. Keep the medium slightly moist and place at around 15–20°C. Germination can be slow and irregular, sometimes taking several months. Avoid waterlogging.
