Short Description
Sporobolus spicatus is a perennial, tuft-forming grass native to saline grasslands, coastal flats, and alkaline soils across parts of Africa and the Middle East. It typically grows 20–80 cm (8–32 in) tall and forms dense clumps with narrow, grayish-green leaves. Its slender, spike-like flower heads produce numerous tiny seeds. The species is highly tolerant of saline and alkaline soils, making it valuable for restoring degraded or salt-affected landscapes and for preventing soil erosion.
 
Germination Tips
Seed treatment: No pretreatment is usually required. Soaking seeds in room-temperature water for 12–24 hours may improve germination.
Sowing: Sow seeds on the surface or cover lightly (about 2–3 mm) with fine sand or soil.
Temperature: Maintain 20–30°C for best germination.
Growing medium: Use a well-drained sandy or loamy seed-starting mix.
Moisture: Keep the medium evenly moist until germination, then reduce watering as seedlings establish.
Light: Bright light or full sun promotes healthy growth.
Germination time: Typically 1–3 weeks under warm conditions.
 
Note: Once established, Sporobolus spicatus is exceptionally drought- and salt-tolerant, but young seedlings should not be allowed to dry out completely during the establishment phase.
