Pernettya mucronata (accepted botanical name: Gaultheria mucronata)
Common names: Prickly Heath, Chilean Pernettya, Chaura, Murtillo. The name Pernettya mucronata is still widely used in horticulture, but it is now classified under the genus Gaultheria.
 
Short Description
A compact, evergreen shrub native to southern Chile and Argentina, growing 0.6–1.5 m (2–5 ft) tall. It has glossy, dark green, pointed leaves, delicate white to pale pink bell-shaped flowers in spring, and striking berries in shades of white, pink, red, purple, or lilac that persist through autumn and winter. Female plants require a nearby male plant for berry production. It thrives in cool climates and acidic soils.
 
Germination Tips
Seed treatment: Cold stratify seeds for 8–12 weeks in moist peat or vermiculite at 2–5°C.
Sowing: Surface sow or cover with only a very thin layer of fine peat or sand, as light helps germination.
Temperature: Maintain 15–20°C after stratification.
Growing medium: Acidic, well-drained mix (peat moss + perlite or fine sand).
Moisture: Keep evenly moist but never waterlogged.
Germination time: Usually 4–12 weeks, though some seeds may take longer due to natural dormancy.
